Düsseldorf, 28 February 2012. –The METAV 2012, the year’s first international trade fair for manufacturing technology and automation, opens its doors in Düsseldorf today. In the upcoming five days to 3 March, around 690 exhibitors from 26 different countries will be showcasing new technology for modern-day metalworking applications. “Registrations for the METAV have been gaining even more momentum in the past two weeks”, says a gratified Dr. Wilfried Schäfer, Executive Director of the METAV’s organiser VDW (German Machine Tool Builders’ Association). “The buoyant demand from manufacturers shows once again that the sector is in good shape, looking forward with optimism to the year 2012, and is keen to seize the excellent opportunities the METAV offers for new business”, adds Schäfer. Exhibitors from abroad, in particular, are showing the flag: their number has risen by more than a tenth compared to 2010.
With more than 36,000 m² of net exhibition area, the METAV will be occupying five halls at Düsseldorf’s Exhibition Centre, which means it’s 12 per cent larger than the preceding event. “The exhibitors are keen to spotlight their capabilities to optimum effect and in the days ahead to showcase a broad spectrum of leading-edge production technology”, says Schäfer.
Arguments in favour of new investment
It was only two weeks ago that the VDW had published record results for Germany’s machine tool industry: production output grew by 33 per cent in 2011, the highest figure ever achieved in the sector’s history. For 2012, production output is expected to rise by another 5 per cent.
“The high level of demand and the full order books are particularly encouraging for the German manufacturers, who with approximately 490 firms constitute the biggest single exhibitor grouping”, reports Schäfer. Their corporate capabilities offer European customers, whose demand rose by 46 per cent in 2011, abundant arguments in favour of new investment. “Even if demand for capital goods may be taking a slight breather in 2012 (as some economic pundits are predicting) there are plenty of issues still awaiting a resolution”, says Schäfer, and cites keywords like energy-efficiency and resource-economy in the production process, new drive concepts in the automotive industry, or the use of new materials in innumerable application categories. For these issues, trade visitors to the METAV will find an abundance of new ideas, both from the exhibitors and from the accompanying programme, which addresses topical trends for industrial production operations, ranging from innovative metal-cutting processes, medical technology and electro-mobility all the way through to fibre composites.
